JOINER
Background
Ronan Doherty, of Armagh city, is a self-employed joiner/carpenter working for builders and the wider public on a range of activities that include making window frames, hanging doors, working on roof trusses and laying wooden floors.
"Working as a joiner was an obvious job for me because my best subjects at school were woodworking, technical drawing and craft. When I'd finished my GCSEs, I approached a number of local companies and was eventually given a start as an apprentice. As well as working in the joinery shop, I was released to study for an NVQ in carpentry and joinery at the local further education college."
"I completed my NVQ and worked for a couple of joinery workshops before setting up my own small business. The reason I decided to start my own business was that I wanted to work for myself, especially in parts of the trade that I enjoy most, such as kitchens and wooden floors."
