DOCTOR
Background
Dr Peter Maguire is consultant anaesthetist at Daisy Hill Hospital in Newry. He explains how he chose a career in medicine.
"My decision to become a doctor was influenced by work experience gained shadowing a local family doctor when I was studying for O'levels. I had been interested in medicine from childhood, rating it as a good and well-paid career that offered great satisfaction from helping people. The work experience also showed me the respect that most people still have for their local doctor."
"This encouraged me to focus on achieving the necessary qualifications for a place in a medical school. With the necessary qualifications I applied for and gained an interview at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in Dublin."
