BRICKLAYER
Background
Paul Connors runs his own bricklaying and building business, PR Connors, in west Belfast.
"Bricklaying wasn't a job I had in mind when I left school. All that I knew was that I wanted to work outdoors with other people of my age. I was drawn into the job by some of my friends who started working on building sites to earn some money. I became interested and decided that I needed to get some relevant training. I decided to sign on for a City and Guilds course in bricklaying and building skills at my local Whiterock Training Centre."
"I then applied for and gained an apprenticeship with a local company, which gave me the skills and experience I needed to get a full-time job. I then worked for a number of builders before deciding to set up my own company."
"It proved to be a very good move for me because bricklayers are in demand for a range of jobs. There's been a tremendous growth in the construction industry, and this has increased the demand for bricklayers."
